Household and garden chemicals

Household and garden chemicals are not accepted at this site. The City of London provides a free hazardous waste collection service for residents in north London. Tyres

Tyres are not accepted at this site.

Unwanted paint

Leftover water-based paint is not accepted at Hornsey Street RRC, but it is accepted for reuse at our other RRCs. This leftover paint is also available for residents to take away for free from these sites. Solvent-based waste paint is classed as hazardous waste so needs to be handled by a specialist contractor.

Plan a visit

Pedestrian access: Residents bringing waste on foot or by bike to Hornsey Street RRC should take the material to the pedestrian drop-off point at the Hornsey Street depot entrance. This drop-off point is only in operation during the opening hours stated above.

For practical and safety reasons, we cannot accept the following items at the pedestrian drop-off point:

  • gas bottles
  • commercial batteries (for example, emergency lighting batteries)
  • paint
  • hazardous waste including asbestos
  • tyres
  • household or garden chemicals
  • soil
  • builders rubble
  • large appliances
  • general household rubbish

Alternatively, pedestrians may use any public mixed recycling points (which take paper, glass, cans, plastic bottles and cardboard) including those on the corner of Caledonian Road and Cottage Road, opposite Caledonian Road tube station.

Book a visit for van or trailer

If you are coming in a van, trailer or stripped vehicle, you need to book in advance using our van booking system. This includes any vehicle without seats fitted in the back including minibuses with seats removed and crew cab type (pick-up) vehicles.

Commercial/trade waste

Other information and services

Asbestos

North London residents can dispose of cement-bonded asbestos at the site for disposal in deep landfill. You must pre-book with the site if you are planning to drop off asbestos. Email hornseystrandr@londonenergyltd.com or call 07557 205 292 to make an appointment.

Site staff will need to:

  • Check that there is enough space in the asbestos container
  • Know how much asbestos you need to dispose of

Before taking the asbestos waste to the RRC, please ensure that it is double wrapped in thick polythene sheeting and fully sealed with strong tape, or alternatively, that small pieces are sealed in thick plastic sacks. You should take care not to break any material into pieces to fit into a bag. Under no circumstances should you use a saw or disc cutter to reduce the size of the sheets as this will generate asbestos dust.

Alternatively, a free asbestos collection can be ordered from the City of London through their hazardous waste collection and disposal service for London residents.

Hard Plastics Trial

As part of a new trial, north London residents can now dispose of hard plastics at Hornsey Street, please use the A-Z search function to find out which hard plastics can be recycled.

Furniture reuse

Furniture provided at this RRC goes to the Reuse shop, located within the Kings Road RRC, Waltham Forest, where they are inspected and safety checked. Items in the shop are priced affordably offering residents the opportunity to get an item they need or want for a fraction of the cost if purchased new.

Furniture such as upholstered furniture without a fire label, with missing parts, damage that may make the item unsafe or which fail the quality inspection for any other reason will not be accepted at the shop but will be sent for recycling where possible.

Charity Waste

Eligible charities can take up to five tonnes of non-hazardous waste/recycling each year, free of charge, to three of our Reuse and Recycling Centres (RRCs): Summers LaneHornsey Street or South Access (in the London boroughs of Barnet, Islington and Waltham Forest respectively). Read more on Taking Charity Waste to North London Reuse and Recycling Centres.
