North London Community Fund Summary of Projects

The Mill is a community space in Waltham Forest who work alongside Forest Fixers to provide a repair club for residents to learn repair skills and bring along their household items to be fixed. 

Forest Fixers have put on regular events throughout the year to engage residents with repair and prevent electrical waste. Forest Fixers also offer workshops for community members to learn repair skills themselves so they are able to fix more items at home.

St Andrew's are a parish church in the heart of Islington, they serve the community through worship and community-inspired events. 

St Andrew's Church have a well establish weekly clothing swap event partnering with various local and national charities. The group's target community are those residing in hostels, children in need and homeless individuals. The funding will be used for equipment to support the events.

Building on the success of last year’s funding, Our Home Our Planet will deliver Eco Show and Tell sustainability fairs in different parts of the borough, working with community groups and local activists. Building a network of relationships between communities, local organisations and the borough, and influencing behaviour change through sustainability workshops.

The first Myddleton Road Market (Markets N22) took place in June 2013. The idea for the market came from Lucy Whitehead, a local resident, who wanted to help to regenerate and breathe life back into the local high street, Myddleton Road.

For the project 'Bowes & Bounds Repair Cafe' Markets N22 were awarded funding. Working with Haringey residents they aim to reduce the waste of electricals by teaching practical repair skills as well as holding events where residents can bring their household items to be fixed.

London Cycling Club (Londra Bisiklet Kulubu) is a Cycling UK affiliated group. They are non-profit community interest company based in Enfield. The group provide cycle training sessions, bike maintenance (learn to fix) sessions and community bike rides. London Cycling Club mainly focus on low-income BAME women (mainly Turkish, Kurdish and Cypriot community) and children.

The fund will allow the team to continue their work refurbishing and donating bicycles, redistributing them to low-income families in need. London Cycling Club also run workshops upskilling residents so they can fix and maintain their bikes themselves to prevent further waste in the future.

Kilburn Repair Club are a community repair organisation that put on regular repair events for residents in Camden. The group's aim is to reduce waste of electricals and textiles through upskilling workshops and fixing parties. 

Kilburn Repair Club were awarded funding to begin this work in Camden, and more specifically Kilburn. The group have held repair cafes throughout the year and more focused workshops on textiles upcycling and electrical waste prevention through Restart Parties.

Forest Recycling Project (FRP) is a charity with environmental and social aims. The team engage with organisations and communities in London through a range of practical initiatives to reduce, re-use and recycle waste, and help people live sustainably.

FRP received funding to continue their pilot model of the Walthamstow Tool Library. The project has reached over 500 residents of Waltham Forest and made a significant impact in reducing C02 emissions through a borrowing rather than buying mentality. The project team hope to expand this model and make it accessible for more London boroughs.

Community Focus Inclusive Arts is an Arts Centre for adults and children with disabilities. Community Focus Inclusive Arts run an exciting selection of creative and wellbeing courses and workshops for students with disabilities, autism and anyone who feels they may need extra support. 

The funding has gone towards textiles workshops for young people with disabilities. The attendees have been upskilled in sewing and design which has led to the prevention of textiles waste.

Clapton Common Boys Club run workshops and activities for young people from the Jewish community. The group received funding to put on a series of environmental workshops for their attendees. Clapton Common Boys Club have been educating young people on waste prevention and it's importance for the environment through activities such as pond dipping.

Bread n Butter are food educators teaching cookery life-skills whilst addressing health and social inequalities and barriers to healthy living. 

Bread n Butter were awarded funding for their 'Waste Warriors' project which has seen them provide demonstrations and educational content for users of foodbanks in Barnet, Enfield and Haringey. The group have also been into schools to provide free workshops to families on food waste prevention and cookery skills. The aim is to educate residents about using unfamiliar foods to prevent their waste, as well as raise awareness for waste and provide practical tips and actions for people to enact in their homes.

Arachne is a community-based charity in Islington with the mission to empower women and help them reach their full potential. The group do this by providing free welfare advice and support, health awareness and information, employment advice and training, accessible groups and classes, and volunteering opportunities.

Arachne have received funding to put on 3 sewing courses for women in the community. The courses are aimed to upskill residents so they can repair and upcycle their clothes and other textiles therefore preventing waste.

Age UK Enfield are a charity supporting and enhancing the lives of older people - the team passionate about improving the lives of older people by ensuring they are valued, active, connected and able to live the life they choose.

The project 'Men in Sheds' received funding this year with an aim to create a safe, social space for men over 60 to talk to and support each other whilst also learning woodworking skills and staying active by doing so. The project has seen the men making many items out of recycled wood, including garden planters which they donated to an Enfield shopping centre.
