The London Community Resource Network (LCRN) works to help Londoners use resources more sustainably to maximise community and environmental benefit.
LCRN received funding to promote textile reuse and repair by developing a network of clothing repair specialists and hosting a working group to look at how to increase textile repair and reuse resources to encourage higher public awareness around textiles waste.
As part of the project, textile repair organisations and individuals in north London were mapped and 57 businesses that offer repair options locally were identified.
A large public event was held in Hackney, named ‘Sustainable Threads’. The event consisted of a clothes swap, a textiles repair café with practical demonstrations of how to fix garments, presentations and discussions on how to reduce the environmental impact that clothes can have and stalls running textile-based initiatives. The event attracted 300 people, leading to 259kg of textile waste being diverted.
