The ‘Urban Soil Food’ project formed a network of three neighbourhood-based food-waste Compost Hubs in Islington. Each site was people-powered, community-centred and supported by an ‘Urban Soil Farmer’. This proposal builds upon a small-scale pilot test on two social housing estates early in 2022, which was supported by Islington Council’s Waste Management team along with input from the Centre for Food Policy, University of London, City, and Islington’s Circular Economy Team.
Octopus Community Network upskilled 10 residents to become Urban Soil Farmers through a mix of online and in-person training. They also delivered 3 4-week courses, each engaging 18 residents with urban farming and the need for food waste prevention.
