Request
would it be possible to know: 1. how much waste arrives at edmonton ecopark a year? 2. what percentage of that waste is incinerated? 3. what percentage of that waste is recycled? 4. what type of waste is burned by edmonton incinerator? is it black bin bag waste, in that case, could it contain some recyclables in it?
Response
Further to our email acknowledging your Environmental Information Regulations request (reference 2023-225), our response is as follows.
You requested information on the quantities of waste that we treat.
The quantities of waste and recycling managed by NLWA are reported in our Annual Report which is available here: https://www.nlwa.gov.uk/ourauthority/nlwa-annual-report-2022-23
Please see the sections on residual waste and recycling for the information.
With regards to question 4: The waste treated at the energy from waste facility is predominantly "black bag waste" from households and businesses, non-recyclable waste brought to public reuse and recycling centres, and waste from litter bins, fly tips and council bulky collections. The north London councils offer comprehensive recycling collection services but if recyclable items are put into residual waste bins then they will be incinerated. About a third of household residual waste bins (by weight) is food, and there are also nappies, pet waste and other items in the bins which contaminate the recyclable items.
If you are dissatisfied with the handling of your request, you may ask for an internal review, which should be submitted within two months of when you received our response to either informationrequests@nlwa.gov.uk or enquiry form quoting the above reference.
If you are not content with the outcome of the review, you may complain to the Information Commissioner, Wycliffe House, Water Lane, Wilmslow, Cheshire, SK9 5AF, or via their online portal. The Information Commissioner will not usually accept complaints before a review has been completed.
