Request
This is [Redacted], I attended your presentation yesterday which I appreciated a lot. Would you please send me a copy by email?
You also agreed to look into my question, which is about NWLA's treatment of waste, especially residual waste, for customers other than the 7 member boroughs.
I double-checked, and from the 2021-22 NLWA report on the website, the amount of residual waste treated was 573,359 tonnes (para 4, Page 15).
I calculated from the data on waste data flow that the residual waste for the 7 boroughs was 451,664.97 tonnes. That is more than 120,000 tonnes less, which I assumed was being treated for other customers. I do not think this is a small amount, and I would appreciate more information about these other customers.
I may well be I have miscalculated the residual waste for the boroughs, very sorry if I did, I put the amounts I found on waste data flow below. From memory one of your slides put this amount at 492,000 tonnes, which is still a lot less than the total amount treated during the year.
If you could tell me how much residual and other waste is treated for customers other than the 7 boroughs, and why this is done, I should appreciate it. Best regards, Tim
PS I am looking forward to the match next Saturday!

Response
Thank you for your request for information received on 23 October 2023. Your request has been allocated the reference number 2023-221 and is being treated under the freedom of information act 2000.
You’ve asked about a difference in reported figures between North London Waste Authority’s Annual Report for 2021-22 and the waste data flow report figures. This is due to the categorisation of waste. The 573,359 tonnes of residual waste stated in our annual report is only waste collected by the seven borough councils. This includes fly-tipping and waste collected by councils from local shops, schools and businesses. The tonnages you have listed from waste data flow are only waste collected from homes, which explains the difference.
LondonEnergy limited treat waste on behalf of North London Waste Authority. In 2022, 17,389 tonnes of waste were treated at Edmonton EcoPark from third parties.
In the presentation I shared in a talk at Southgate District Civic Voice on 21 October 2023, the tonnages you referenced were only applicable to household waste in the seven boroughs and not reflective of all local authority collected waste by the seven boroughs in north London.
I hope this helps clarify the different tonnages and how waste is being managed. If you are dissatisfied with the handling of your request, you may ask for an internal review, which should be submitted within two months of when you received our response to either informationrequests@nlwa.gov.uk or our enquiry form quoting the above reference.
If you are not content with the outcome of the review, you may complain to the Information Commissioner, Wycliffe House, Water Lane, Wilmslow, Cheshire, SK9 5AF, or via their online portal. The Information Commissioner will not usually accept complaints before a review has been completed.
