Queries about the Veolia/LB Haringey A-Z of Recycling I have used italics to quote from your website, with my comments in normal font and red. My suggestions for improving it are: 1)Need to remove the confusion I found re Carrier Bags: the first reference does not make it clear whether it means paper or plastic carrier bags although lower down the list, Shopping Bags does make this clear. Maybe the “Carrier Bag” entry should start with by saying “Paper and plastic carrier bags can be recycled in....” The current entry Carrier Bags reads: Recycling wheelie bins and green sacks Some supermarkets Try to avoid plastic bags by using a 'bag for life' or cloth/canvas bag when you go shopping 2)Fat and oil : have you considered suggesting that in order to prevent more water pollution, when there is not enough oil to pour into a container for the special oil collection, before rinsing and washing them people should wipe out with waste paper the grease from pans and containers which have been used for cooking,? This would reduce the amount of fat which goes into the sewage system. 3)Packaging- the entry says A lot of packaging materials are not recyclable BUT then it does not tell you any more – you have to search further down the list, and even so, I could not find anything about the tougher transparent plastic which is used to cover hardware items like toys or small electrical goods, often with card-board on the back and plastic on the front. This needs to be included in the Plastic section too, which currently reads: Plastic Plastic pots, tubs, trays, bags and bottles can be recycled via: Recycling wheelie bins and green sacks Please empty, rinse and remove tops. Important: plastic film, cutlery/straws, crisp packets, plastic toys and medicine packs cannot be recycled. This is clear but it omits information about a lot of plastics, whether take-away plastics, lids and tops of trays and tubs or clear tougher plastic packaging. 4)Takeaway food containers: I think you need to be much more specific here, and first to state what CAN be recycled, then to state the limitations. Most takeaway food containers cannot be recycled. Including the clear plastic containers with lids? Clean foil or plastic cartons can be recycled via: Recycling wheelie bins and green sacks. What kind of cartons do you mean? I cannot envisage these. Paper and cardboard takeaway containers should only be recycled if they are completely free of food. Polystyrene containers should not be put into the recycling bin or sack Some takeaway outlets use sturdy plastic boxes with lids. These can be very useful for storing other leftovers and bringing lunch to work, so try not to throw them away. But can they be recycled or not? Also, do you collect all colours of plastic containers – clear, white, blue, brown, black....? |
Response
Thank you for your suggestions supplied earlier this year about how we might improve the recycling information on our website to make it clearer what can and cannot be recycled. We had planned to update our information and respond to you as a result, but decided in the meantime to carry out a more thorough review of our website - this is now underway. So I’m very sorry didn’t reply to you, but we will take your suggestions into account in updating the information we provide on what can and cannot be recycled in north London as part of our website revision work. In the meantime thank you for your emailed suggestions which will be really useful when we update the website information. Thank you for taking the time to provide your comments to us.
