Hornsey Street Reuse and Recycling Centre has recently introduced a new, dedicated pedestrian zone, making it easier for Islington residents to bring small recyclable materials to the centre.
This initiative is part of North London Waste Authority's (NLWA) ongoing commitment to helping residents recycle and reuse more.
As 67% of Islington households do not own a car or van, most residents rely on public transport, walking, or cycling to get around, including to recycle their household items.
The new improvements are facilitating visits to the recycling centre without the need for a car or van. This will bolster efforts among Islington’s environmentally responsible residents, enabling them to safeguard the planet’s resources, both through recycling and choosing a low carbon mode of transport.
NLWA has made a significant investment into upgrading the recycling centre, enhancing signage, security and accessibility at the site. These changes ensure that the centre is user-friendly and safe for all visitors.
New dedicated containers for garden waste, textiles, and Waste from Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE), have also been installed in the pedestrian area.
Other materials that pedestrians and cyclists can bring to the centre include:
- Books
- Cardboard
- Garden waste
- Household batteries
- Printer cartridges
- Scrap metal
- Scrap wood
- Small electrical items and mobile phones
- Small items of furniture
- Small reusable household bric-a-brac
- Textiles and clothes
Councillor Rowena Champion, Vice Chair of NLWA and Executive Member for Environment, Air Quality and Transport, said: "We know how important it is to make recycling as accessible and convenient as possible for our residents, and these improvements at Hornsey Street Reuse and Recycling Centre are a significant step forward.
“By making pedestrian and cyclist access easier, we are enabling more people to recycle responsibly while supporting greener, healthier, low-carbon travel choices. This investment reflects our dedication to tackling the climate crisis and to creating a cleaner, greener healthier Islington for all."
The improved infrastructure at the Hornsey Street site paves the way towards a more circular economy, encouraging greater reuse and recycling across north London.
NLWA is committed to leading the way in recycling innovation. As well as accessible and easy-to-use facilities, north London has an extensive range of specialist recycling services, such as a reuse scheme for household items and DIY materials, mattress recycling and carpet recycling.
