Go waste-free this World Book Day

World Book Day is fast approaching, and students and their parents up and down the country will be beginning to think about which of their favourite book characters they will be dressing up as this year.

This is a great way to get kids excited about reading, and an important chance for young people to ditch their uniforms for a day and express their individuality. For many families however, producing a new costume each year can also represent an unwelcome financial pressure. Furthermore, many costumes will be bought and worn once before being thrown away, with most ending up in landfill.

This year, we’re challenging schools to combat this issue and host a waste-free World Book Day event by putting on a costume swap-shop in the run up to the day. A costume swap event can be an excellent way to make your World Book Day a more cost friendly and environmentally friendly celebration.

To help you get started, we’ve put together this helpful resource pack with tips and guidance on setting up your own swap shop. You’ll also find included a poster for advertising your event.

For any questions about how to organise your own swap-shop, or to find out about other campaigns we are running to help reduce textile waste in schools, feel free to contact us at education@nlwa.gov.uk.
