Thanks to the local community organisation, Haringey Fixers, residents of Haringey have been able to prevent electrical waste and extend the lifespan of their small electricals whilst also finding friendly faces and a warm welcome.
Haringey Fixers host regular repair cafes across venues in Haringey where locals bring their items to be repaired for free. In 2022 the group got together with the aim to host one repair café a month from April to September. This pilot project was a success, so they decided to continue the repair cafes and were awarded funding from the North London Community Fund in 2023 to do so. The organisation has since become a local institution and has repaired everything from lamps to toys to sewing machines.
Not only do residents come to get their items repaired, but they also stop by for a chat. One resident who attended a repair café, Elizabeth N, said: “When I arrived I was actually quite miserable. The volunteers were so lovely and kind and chatty I left feeling 100 times better”.
Community organisations play a vital role in inspiring residents to practice waste prevention habits, but also in creating safe and fun social spaces.
From January to August 2024 Haringey Fixers successfully repaired 117 items promoting the circular economy whilst doing so. These repair cafes mean so much to residents and we at the North London Waste Authority are proud to be able to fund their continued work.
