Wise Up To Waste

You CAN make a meal of it! Reduce waste and save ££s by simply checking the cupboard before you shop

Did you know that the tastiest meals could be lurking in your kitchen cupboard? The average household wastes around £470 of food a year (1) – that is food that went in the bin or recycling when it could have been eaten. Last year, in north London alone, food made up 36 per cent of the rubbish collected from general waste bins (2)

As part of its Wise Up to Waste Campaign ( North London Waste Authority (NLWA) wants north London residents to #makeamealofit and check the cupboard or fridge before they go food shopping. This will not only reduce waste, but save residents money too.

For inspiration, NLWA has produced six easy to follow “how to” videos and infographics of recipes using simple ingredients, including a delicious steamed fruit mug cake which can be microwaved in seconds, a quick curry, fishcakes, and a pasta frittata – all easily made from store cupboard staples or leftovers.

NLWA is also encouraging residents to share their own food saving recipes on social media using #makeamealofit.

Cllr Clyde Loakes, Chair of NLWA said: “When we throw food away with our general rubbish, if it goes into a landfill site, it can biodegrade and create methane, a very damaging greenhouse gas.

“Regularly checking what food you have in your cupboards, fridge and freezer will help you avoid careless impulse buying or buying things you already have.

“Our #makeamealofit campaign will give you inspiration to be creative with what is in the cupboard.” Cooked leftovers can be turned into another meal, or labelled and frozen for later. Soups, stews, omelettes and salads are all great dishes for using up leftover ingredients – share your favourite waste-free and money-saving dishes with us using #makeamealofit.”
